Drawing Space Marine Portraits on the Train
I recently watch a very impressive tutorial by Miguel Iglesias: Ultimate guide on How to make amazing Space Marines portraits. Very inspirational new perspective about breaking the portrait rules to fit into the world lore and narrative, shout out to Miguel!
Drawing on the train in to work has been my past time for the past decade, but I still feel uncomfortable when I’m filmed, and totally unnatural

What is fantastic about being on public transport is that the people around you form your reference and inspiration! Need lighting, need proportions, gaze around, an elderly gentle man saw me looking in his direction, I was copying his face:

There drawing are blitz-ed out at 15,20,25,30min intervals max, downsize of public transport is on occasion you might have to vacate a seat for a person with a greater need than yours. I have sketched standing up before as well, no big deal, just a sore neck.
I totally enjoyed the freedom of breaking portrait rules, being as disproportionate as possible in the skeletal structure but only maintaining the fixed radios of the eye level, distance and ratio. What I found difficult is that female faces don’t actually lend themselves to this type of rule breaking, I believe that is due to the smoothness and underlining skeletal structure, its far more unnatural, that’s not to say that I won’t experiment further!
These came out a bit violent, but that is the nature of the “war” although very enjoyable to draw, I also did a few at home to practice some inking
